Kids, gilts safari to Louisville for NJSS

The National Junior Swine Association is ready to get wild and “Welcome to the Jungle” more than 700 kids and 1,033 gilts from 27 states at the National Junior Summer Spectacular this week in Louisville, Ky.

The annual event starts Tuesday, June 29, and ends Saturday, July 3, and includes a gilt show as well as showmanship, skillathon, judging, public and extemporaneous speaking, photography, poster, state scrapbook, and sweepstakes contests. All NJSA members, open to youth ages 21 and under, are welcome to participate. "This is one of the biggest shows we've had in terms of number of kids registered," says Darrell Anderson, CEO of the National Swine Registry, the umbrella organization of the NJSA. "It's the biggest event of the year for NJSA. It's an intense week of competition, but an enjoyable one."

In addition to the contests, other events include election of the 2010-2012 NJSA board of directors, auction of the donated Foundation Female, silent auction, NJSA annual meeting, pizza party and dance, awards breakfast and inspirational service, and recognition of sweepstakes winners. Extreme Makeover: Web Edition

If you got to this blog through the NSR website you've already seen it -- our new website! We posted a link to the "beta" (in progress) site last week, but today we flipped the switch and it's official! The NSR has a new, highly functional, made-over, face-lifted website! We hope you like it as much as we have enjoyed the process of trying to identify easier ways for our members and users to find the information on the shows, sales, events and activities!

We hope that the new layout and structure makes it easy to find the information you are looking for. However, we realize it is new and different, and if you find there is something you are missing, please contact us and we will be happy to help you find it. And, realize, it is a work in progress -- there are still pages that have additional information on the way!

We would like to thank NSR Creative Director Steve Weintraut for the outstanding work he has put into conceptualizing, designing and coding this entire site. If you like his work and the new site, go ahead and post a comment -- or shoot him an email at steve@nationalswine.com.

Happy surfin' in the NSR world!

Penner's Herd Visit

Thank You John and Kyle for taking the time for me to stop by. The hogs looked great. Below are some photos Kyle took.

New Hampshire Boar called First Aid. He is a Homegrown x Heatwave. This guy is wide chested, soft made, and heavy muscled. It is a shame he injured himself and John was not able to exhibit him at the 2010 World Pork Expo. If you are interested in using him contact John or Kyle.

This 7th parity sows looks like Hampshire females should. She is a Topshot x Flashback and the material grandam of First Aid (the boar pictured above). She is one of the best Hampshire sows I have seen.

RW Genetics Herd Visit

These photos are from my most recent visit to RW Genetics. Rick and his crew have a great set of pigs they are getting ready to offers for sale, the Triple Bar 7's, Bottom's Up, 8-Ball's and Epic's looked great. Thanks guy's for taking the time to show me around.

This guy looked great! He is a Full Shift and out of the same dam as Problem Solver. It is hard to make a boar with a better hip and rear leg. Study how square he is underneath.
141-7 is an April 17, he is sire by Rick's new herd boar Logic and is out of a Turn it Up sow. I think this guy has a bright future a head of him! You couldn't put a better skeleton in a young hog. This guy floats around the pen. His hip and rear wheels are great.
The 77-2 crossbred gilt is truly something special! She is a Triple Bar 7 out of Epic's and Super Freaks mother. She is powerful from every angle, combine this with tones of body and a extreme correct skeleton, she could be deadly when all the dust settles.

Foreign guests visit America's Best Genetics booth at the World Pork Expo

Foreign guests at the World Pork Expo here in Des Moines, Iowa, are greeted with American hospitality at the International Hospitality Center, hosted by America’s Best Genetics in partnership with the National Pork Producers Council.

Approximately 20 members and partners of America’s Best Genetics are exhibiting jointly in the open educational and networking area, which offers cold water and soda as well as meeting spaces and a place for visitors to relax and visit about swine genetics. America’s Best Genetics works to extend the influence and exposure of the National Swine Registry and its commercial-oriented breeders as a strong and viable option for world-wide genetics.

NSR’s Director of Genetic and Technical Services, Clint Schwab, Ph.D., says the purpose of the booth is to create an area for international visitors to meet and visit with the top U.S. purebred swine breeders. “This is a great common area for our foreign visitors to relax and learn more about the genetic programs our members have, and what they can offer to international production systems.”

NJSA President Lynsee Shaffer at World Pork Expo registration

Video: NJSA President Lynsee Shaffer

Pigs and kids have been filing into the swine barn all day in preparation for the 2010 World Pork Expo Junior Classic, here in Des Moines, Iowa. More than 1,700 pigs have been registered by approximately 650 members of the National Junior Swine Association and Team Purebred. The young exhibitors come from 26 states, as well as seven foreign countries, and will show barrows and gilts starting Wednesday, June 9.

Alan Duttlinger, director of junior activities for the National Swine Registry, says this is a record number of entries for the World Pork Expo Junior National. "Last year this show had a record number of entries, and this year we are 22 percent higher," says Duttlinger. "It's great to see the kids so excited, and ready to put their months of hard work and preparation on display."
