Purebred Customers from China Learn About STAGES™

This past week, NSR hosted a group of visitors from China at theoffice in West Lafayette, Ind. The group, accompanied by Professor Wang of China Agricultural University, included buyers from three different Chinesecompanies. Throughout the visit, the buyers were escorted byGeorge Bruns and Chuck Bastrom of Ag-World Inc., and Nicholas Zhang of ChinaAnimal Husbandry Group.

NSR CEO, Dr. Clint Schwab, and Director of Genetic and Technical Services at NSR, Dr. Justin Fix, hosted the meeting, which centered on the Swine Genetic and Testing Evaluation System (STAGES™). STAGES™ is a program developed by the National Swine Registry to facilitategenetic improvement through calculation of the most economically significanttraits in purebred swine production. The international breeders, all customers of U.S. purebred genetics, were interested in the intricacies and daily functions of the genetic program. To learn more about STAGES™, clickhere.

Combined, the group of producers selected over 1,000 headfor shipment from the U.S. to China this coming February.

New Year Brings New Additions to NSR Team

The 2012 New Year’s celebration included the addition of two new staff members to the National Swine Registry – Brian Anderson and Jen Gillespie.

Anderson joined the NSR team of field representatives and will be covering the Southwest territory (see the map below). Brian will visit breeders across the Southwestern region of the U.S. and attend NSR shows and events to promote the purebred use of Doroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire swine. NSR CEO Clint Schwab is excited to have Anderson on board: “Brian brings to the position many years of experience in different facets of the livestock industry,” Schwab says. “He was raised in the purebred swine business, which spurred his obvious passion and understanding of the purebred swine industry. We are excited to have someone with his background and expertise joining our team and representing the NSR and its members.”

Anderson obtained his bachelor’s degree in animal science production from Kansas State University and has a lifetime of knowledge and experience in the swine industry, as well as extensive involvement with livestock shows, clinics and camps across the United States. Most noted for his nearly two decades of coaching junior college livestock judging teams at Coffeyville Community College and Fort Scott Community College, both in Kansas, Anderson has guided many highly competitive teams and served as the National Junior College Judging Coaches’ Association president.

The second addition to the NSR team, Jen Gillespie, started her work as the Director of Marketing & Communications the first week of January. She will work out of the West Lafayette office, overseeing the communications division of the organization. Gillespie will be leading the production of Seedstock EDGE, as well as pursuing marketing opportunities thorough social media and interactive technology.

“I am excited to add someone of Jen’s caliber to the NSR team,” Schwab says. “Her background and experience will prove a valuable resource to NSR members as she leads the Marketing and Communications team. We look forward to exposing her skill-set in building increased awareness of the programs within NSR and leading the future development of marketing resources for NSR members.”

The Kansas native holds a master’s degree in agricultural communications from Oklahoma State University and a bachelor’s degree in agribusiness from Kansas State University. Gillespie brings valuable purebred and livestock marketing experience from her industry relations internship with Certified Angus Beef, LLC, as well as ag policy experience from 6 months with the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C. In addition, she boasts publication production knowledge gained as the editorial assistant for the Journal of Applied Communications and videography skills learned through an internship with SUNUP Television at Oklahoma State.

Grimm and boar may appear in Extreme Makeover: Home Edition tonight

Tune into ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition this evening at 8 EST/7 p.m. CST to try and catch a glimpse of Yorkshire breeder Jim Grimm and his boar, JGR Big Easy 12-5.

Grimm and "Big Easy" visit with some of the show's crew. The Grimms used the opportunity to educate the public about swine production.

The Grimm family was on-site while the Extreme Makeover crew filmed this evening’s episode in northwest Iowa, and Big Easy was invited to give a cameo performance in the opening scene.

All together, more than 1,000 community volunteers, including the Grimms, helped the Gibbs family rebuild their home.

NPPC offers scholarships to future pork-industry leaders

The National Pork Producers Council is pleased to announce the 2012 Lois Britt Memorial Pork Industry Scholarship Program administered by the National Pork Producers Council.

Introduced in 1990 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Live Hog Futures, the Pork Industry Scholarship Program continues to recognize outstanding youth in the pork community. Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to students who intend to pursue a career in the pork industry-talented and thoughtful students who may emerge as industry leaders someday.

To be eligible applicants must:
1. Be an undergraduate student in a two-year swine program or four-year college of agriculture;
2. Write a brief letter indicating what role you see yourself playing in the pork industry after graduation;
3. Submit an essay of 750 words or less describing an issue you see confronting the pork industry today or in the future – and offer your solutions;
4. Obtain two letters of reference from current or former professors or industry professionals;
5. Prepare a cover sheet including:’
a. Name
b. Complete mailing address, telephone number, and email address
c. School name
d. Year in school
e. Permanent mailing address and telephone number
f. Social Security Number
6. Submit the above items in a single envelope to:

Grimm's boar, "Big Easy's" big debut

Jim Grimm’s proven herdsire is now a rising star. JGR9 Big Easy 12-5, made his television debut in a cameo performance on the popular show Extreme Home Makeover.

ABC’s Extreme Home Makeover builds community while building new homes for deserving families. While on location filming a show in northwest Iowa, the crew of Extreme Home Makeover invited the Grimm’s to take part in the show – by bringing some “pig power” on site. Before the show’s host, Ty Pennington, could shout his famous saying, “Move that bus,” Big Easy took part in the opening of the show.

The large, Yorkshire boar that lives at Grimm Quality Purebreds in Maynard, Iowa, was featured as one way the community could demolish the existing home. Although the crowd opted for a large tractor to level the house, Big Easy spent plenty of time in the spotlight and was a hit with the show’s cast.

Pennington even made a personal visit to “meet” Big Easy in his stock trailer. The show’s star snapped pictures with the boar, while other cast members commented on how “cute” and calm he was, say Pat Grimm, Jim’s wife.

The Grimms grabbed the opportunity to educate people about the industry and answered any questions they had.

“It was nice to educate people,” Pat says. She adds with a laugh, when they first received the casting call the producer asked if they could train the boar to lay down on request.

More than 1,000 community volunteers showed up to help with the project, and when the first day of filming concluded the Grimms were asked onstage to receive a round of applause for bringing Big Easy from the cast, crew and community.

“It was quite the experience,” Pat says. “We’ll never get anything like that again.”

Cast, crew and volunteers all visited with the Grimms about their boar and the swine industry.

The episode featuring Big Easy should air sometime after the first of the year. More details about the exact schedule will be released in the future.

Schwab speaks on genetic improvement in Philippines

at a seminar in the Philippines.

Dr. Clint Schwab, interim CEO and director of genetic and technical services for the NSR, visited the Philippines to take part in a seminar on international gene transfer in swine, held Oct. 20 in Manila.

The seminar was the final summarization and review component of a multi-year research project, led by Dr. Robert Knox, swine Extension specialist at the University of Illinois, and funded by the Foreign Ag Service, to study and develop systems to use frozen semen technologies to transport U.S. genetics from the U.S. to the Philippines.

Schwab presented on the use of genetic resources for improving production efficiency. Joining him on the slate of speakers were Knox, Dr. Sherrie Clark, associate professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, Kevin Brooks, author, college lecturer and owner of BK Solutions consulting, and Dr. Wayne Singleton, professor emeritus at Purdue University and owner of a swine reproductive management services consulting company.

Other talks included overviews on the Philippine and U.S. swine industries, issues for swine health and disease, global health issues and importation, an economic analysis of new genetics in the Philippines, reproductive management for efficient genetic improvement, and technology for use of frozen boar semen.

As a result of the project, frozen semen has been effectively used to implement American purebred genetics into Philippine swine herds.

NSR builds ties with Ukraine trade mission

Ukraine was the destination of a recent trade mission conducted by NSR’s Dr. Clint Schwab, interim CEO, and Dr. Justin Fix, genetic programs specialist, on Oct. 2-9. NSR participated in the Ukraine Animal Farming tradeshow, hosting a booth along with partner Dnipro Hybrids, a Ukrainian swine company that has been utilizing purebred American swine genetics for several years.

Fix and Schwab met with representatives from the U.S. embassy in Ukraine to discuss establishment of a live animal protocol, allowing U.S. exports of live swine into the country. They also had valuable discussions with Ukrainian swine businessmen to learn more how to design and create genetic evaluation and service packages for international swine clients.

After the trade show, Fix and Schwab traveled to the VK&K farm, a swine farm that had ordered 500 doses of frozen American purebred semen, where they toured their swine facilities and had discussions about future business partnerships.

The team also visited Dnipro Hybrids farm to discuss the data extract and transfer process to facilitate the exchange of American sired pigs from Ukrainian swine farms, which will serve as the basis for implementing Ukrainian farms into an international genetic evaluation. They also toured the farm and learned about the genetics, production system and data management software.

Ukraine continues to be a developing market for U.S. swine genetics, and there is tremendous opportunity to create long-term relationships with integrated swine production systems there.

NPPC claims victory with passage of FTAs

Calling it one of the “greatest victories ever for the U.S. pork industry, ” the National Pork Producers Council lauded last Friday’s congressional approval of the free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea.

“These trade agreements will be a boon for U.S. pork producers and for the U.S. economy and jobs,” said Doug Wolf, NPPC president and a pork producer from Lancaster, Wis. “Passage of these FTAs is one of the greatest victories ever for the U.S. pork industry.”

The Senate and House passed each of the FTAs by comfortable margins.

The deals with Colombia, Panama and South Korea, when fully implemented, will generate nearly $772 million in new pork sales, add more than $11 to the price producers receive for each hog marketed and create more than 10,000 pork industry jobs, according to Iowa State University economist Dermot Hayes.

“It was extremely important that we approved these FTAs now,” Wolf said, “because while these deals have languished for more than four years, our competitors have negotiated their own trade agreements with Colombia, Panama and South Korea, and the United States has lost market share in those countries.”

The U.S. pork industry was instrumental in getting the trade agreements approved, particularly the deal with South Korea. Last December when the United States and the Asian nation were at an impasse over trade in autos, the U.S. pork industry agreed to move back the effective date for when much of its exports enter Korea at a zero tariff rate. NPPC led the agricultural community in support of the FTAs.

“America’s pork producers are grateful to the Obama administration's trade team, including U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, and to Congress for getting the trade agreements done,” Wolf said. “Now we call on the United States and these three FTA partners to get the agreements implemented ASAP. The longer it takes to implement, the more U.S. market share in these nations will be imperiled.”

Exports are vital to the U.S. pork industry, which last year shipped nearly $4.8 billion of pork, an amount that added about $56 to the price producers received for each hog marketed.

NSR completes trade mission to South Korea

The National Swine Registry participated in a trade mission to South Korea from September 18-25, where they hosted a booth at the Korea International Livestock Expo trade show in Daegu, as well as conducted a joint seminar with the Korea Animal Improvement Association (KAIA). Dr. Justin Fix, NSR genetic programs specialist, along with Dr. Chad Stahl of Food Animal Consultation and Testing Services in Sheldon, Iowa, and Max Waldo and Ross Wollenburg of Waldo Farms in DeWitt, Neb., attended.

More than 100 South Korean swine industry members attended the joint KAIA seminar, held in conjunction with the trade show. NSR hosted several educational presentations, including a talk on improving meat quality, presented by Stahl, and an overview of the economic effects of not implementing a complete genetic program, given by Fix. Additionally, Fix and the swine general manager of the KAIA discussed the desire for research on a joint-genetic evaluation program.

Fix and Stahl visited a commercial swine harvest facility to learn more about how carcasses are priced and what traits are desirable and rewarded. They had the opportunity to visit with South Korean swine professionals about the purchasing, harvest, and sales process of pork carcasses as well as the country’s meat inspection and grading service processes. The trade team also visited a Korean farm that has plans to construct a GGP/GP facility stocked with American genetics, hopefully in early 2012, and is interested in a long-term service agreement with NSR.

NSR will continue communications with Korean breeders who are working to restock after the country’s devastating loss of swine populations due to foot and mouth disease, and will continue to build market share of American purebred swine genetics in this country through America’s Best Genetics.

Dian hired as software developer at NSR

NSR announces the hire of Adam Dian of West Lafayette, Ind., to fill the newly-created position of software developer. In this position, Dian will collaborate with the various departments within NSR to develop web and server-based applications to meet the diverse needs of the organization.

Dian is originally from Roanoke, Ind., and graduated from Purdue University in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in computer graphics technology, specializing in web development and computer animation. While at Purdue, Dian was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity. In his spare time, he enjoys playing golf and shooting billiards. He and his wife, Brittany, reside in West Lafayette.

NJSA takes purebred swine to National FFA Convention

The NJSA and four, purebred swine cutouts took their place among the blue and gold at the 2011 National FFA Convention, held in Indianapolis Oct. 19-22, with a booth at the National FFA Agricultural Career Show. NSR Director of Junior Activities Cally Hass was joined by NSJA Ambassadors Kyle Mendes, Calif., and T.J. Doherty, Wis., and NJSA Vice President Kaylee Miller, Ind., to promote NJSA, distribute information, and talk with prospective members interested in showing purebred swine. Visitors to the booth, sponsored by the National Pork Board, had the opportunity to have their photo taken with the four cutout showpigs. Swine Farms: A Great Place To Work is the theme of this year’s Workforce Development Seminar set for Oct. 18 at the Country Inn & Suites, Mankato. The seminar runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Keynote speaker will be Bruce Vincent, the founder of Provider Pals and a nationally recognized agricultural advocate. Vincent’s opening talk, "So, You Want to Date My Daughter," looks at how understanding society’s environmental and animal husbandry concerns is critical to engaging the public.

At his afternoon talk, "With Vision, There is Hope," he will discuss how Americans are taught that getting your hands dirty at work is an unfulfilling career choice. Vincent will discuss why this outlook is risky for those who feed, clothe, and shelter humanity and why reversing this trend is important to workforce competency, and economic and environmental health.

Although the seminar is geared towards those who work in pork production, the speakers will provide beneficial information for anyone involved in livestock care and agriculture.

NSR seeks candidates for position of field representative

The National Swine Registry is currently seeking candidates for the position of field representative. The successful candidate will cover the Southwestern and Western states and will represent the National Swine Registry and the National Junior Swine Association at various events and functions. This position will be involved with various functions of all NSR departmental efforts; however, frequent interaction with NSR Marketing and Communications staff will be required in serving as a liaison for breeders in their individual marketing efforts. The successful candidate will also play an integral role in the facilitation and development of NJSA events.

This position will require considerable travel and could involve as many as 125 nights away from home annually. Location is flexible within the designated territory, but access to a major airport would be advantageous.

A degree in animal science and a background in the purebred swine industry is preferred, but not required. The successful candidate should excel in communication skills and have the desire and ability to assist NSR and NJSA members reach their individual goals.

Gordon Spronk, DVM, is the recipient of the 2011 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award. The award was presented at the Allen D. Leman Swine Conference, Sept. 17-20, 2011, in St. Paul, Minn. by Pfizer Animal Health and the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine.

"We are privileged to honor such an exceptional animal health care leader," says Steve Sornsen, DVM, MS, senior director, pork technical services at Pfizer Animal Health. "Dr. Spronk has provided knowledge and skill to many clients and has set an excellent example of leadership and dedication to not only his peers but also to the whole industry."

Spronk is the 18th recipient of this award that honors individuals who have made a significant impact on swine health management research and was created in honor of Allen D. Leman. Leman strived to bring together professionals to discuss new research and important issues in the swine industry. He also helped establish the swine conference for this purpose.

"I'm humbled to have received this award because it symbolizes work by practitioners that are making significant contributions from the field to research that is moving disease control and elimination forward," says Gordon Spronk, DVM. "It recognizes the role that the practitioner plays from the field."

He adds: "Dr. Al Leman was my mentor and the reason that I'm a swine veterinarian. It's very rewarding receiving an award in his name and from the University of Minnesota, my alma mater."

For the past 30 years, Spronk has been a staff veterinarian and partner at Pipestone Veterinary Clinic in Pipestone, Minn. He serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, where he sits on the advisory board of the Swine Disease Eradication Center.

Named Swine Practitioner of the Year by the American Association of Swine Practitioners in 2000, Spronk has earned recognition by being active in the field of swine health, management and production.

He received his doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Minnesota.

Hummel leaves NSR

NSR Field Representative Kade Hummel left the NSR in August to take a position as manager of the show feed division of JBS United. Hummel worked for the NSR since March 2005, when he started as a field representative focusing on the activities of the National Junior Swine Association before transitioning to a general field representative covering parts of the Midwest and California, Oklahoma and Texas. He was responsible for promoting purebred Duroc, Hampshire, Landrace and Yorkshire swine, providing technical assistance to breeders, attending NSR and NJSA events, and promoting involvement in registry shows and sales. Hummel looks forward to management opportunities and a steady geographical work base in his new position.

JBS United, Lindner Feeds form show feed partnership

JBS United enters agreement to manufacture, market and distribute Lindner Feed and Milling Company's swine show feeds

SHERIDAN, Ind. – JBS United and the Lindner Feed & Milling Company have entered into an agreement for JBS United to be the exclusive manufacturer, marketer and distributor of Lindner's Swine Show Feeds in the Midwest and other regions not currently served by Lindner Feed & Milling. The combined entity will co-brand Lindner's existing products and operate as "Lindner-United."

In addition to existing Lindner showpig feed products, this agreement also allows JBS United and Lindner to collaborate on new products. Lindner's experience and success providing products for showpigs, combined with JBS United's history of animal nutrition research, is expected to lead to exciting new products.

Lindner–United will offer the product line at existing JBS United locations and will be actively pursuing dealers throughout the Midwest to distribute the product line. Kade Hummel of Cabery, Ill., has been hired to serve in the newly created role of Show Feed Product Manager. Additionally, Jesse Heimer of Taylor, Mo., is working with the company on behalf of Lindner to assist in the areas of marketing, distribution and technical service for all products.

Purdue career night to provide information on pork industry careers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — As students begin their search for internships and regular jobs, a career night on Oct. 3 will give them the chance to learn about opportunities in the pork industry. Hosted by the Purdue University Pork Interest Group, the Fall Pork Career Night will take place 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Room 3-113 of Lilly Hall.

Representatives from pork industry businesses MPPP Farms, Pig Improvement Company North America, Indiana Packers Corporation, JBS United, Novus International and Pfizer Animal Health will give brief presentations. They also will take part in a panel discussion about careers in commercial production, seedstock production, pork processing, the feed industry and supporting industry sales and technical support. Andon Boocher, a 2005 Purdue Animal Sciences alumnus, will share his experience in transitioning from college to a career in the pork industry. He will give students advice on what they should do while still in college and what companies are looking for in graduates.

"It is important for students to realize the variety of career opportunities available in the pork industry. Each company will discuss what they look for when hiring, which will be useful to students as they apply for jobs," said Allan Schinckel a Purdue Extension animal scientist.

Schinckel said interest in the event, now in its third year, has increased since it started. He expects 20-30 students to take advantage of the program, which is one of several the department puts on to help place students in internships, and full- and part-time jobs.

2011 National Barrow Show Sire Progeny Test winners named

The NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® Sire Progeny Test remains the most extensive, unbiased evaluation of progeny performance available to purebred swine breeders.

Currently, 12 different measures of progeny performance are recorded on every pig that completes the testing period. These include evaluations of carcass composition, growth performance, meat quality, and eating quality. These data are compiled and returned to participating breeders for use within their individual breeding or marketing program.

Changes within the industry have lead to different production and marketing schemes utilized by purebred breeding herds. In general, these can be characterized as either: a) mainstream pork production aimed at efficient production of lean product, or b) production aimed at enhanced eating quality. In order to reflect these industry changes, the NBS® Progeny Test evaluated the progeny performance of a sire based on the two production systems described above and recognizes sires that excel in either or both of the production and marketing structures. Specifically, sires that excel in mainstream pork production traits will be recognized with “SUPER SIRE™” Awards, while sires that excel in eating quality-based traits will receive “PORQUE” Awards (PORk Quality Excellence).

SUPER SIRE™ Index: Used to reflect mainstream pork production where 90 percent of the weight is given to components of lean gain and 10 percent of the weight is assigned to characters that influence consumer acceptance.

Adwell and Hodson recognized at the 2011 National Barrow Show

Harold Hodson was inducted into the NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® Hall of Fame.

Hodson has contributed his talents in many different arenas at the NBS®, starting in 1960, as high individual in the judging contest.

While serving as the judging coach at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Hodson coached two winning teams, in ’76 and ’78. In 1972, Hodson initiated the first “pilgrimage” and started the tradition that continues today where teams practice at different farms in route to the NBS®. His ability to evaluate livestock was recognized by his peers. Hodson has served on the truckload committee and has stepped into the ring to evaluate several breeds at the NBS®. His contributions to the judging contest will long be remembered, from serving as a member of the selection to committee and as the referee official to providing critique for judges in the 4-H/FFA division along with providing awards for top individuals for many years.

The NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® and the National Association of Swine Records are honored to present Harold Hodson with the 2011 Hall of Fame Award.

Jerry Adwell was presented the Distinguished Service Award at the 2011 NATIONAL BARROW SHOW®.

It is an honor for the NBS®, the National Association of Swine Records and the past and present NBS® exhibitors and participants to recognize Adwell and express their gratitude for his years of service and dedication to the event.

2011 National Barrow Show Judging Contest Results

AUSTIN, MINN. (Sept 13, 2011) -- Winners in the 65th annual NATIONAL BARROW SHOW® Swine Judging Contest held Sept. 12th in Austin, Minn., were Texas Tech University of Lubbock in the senior college division; Black Hawk East, Kewanee, Ill., in the junior college division; and Dekalb County 4-H, Ill., in the junior division.

The winning team in each of the three levels of judging competition was awarded according to points accumulated in the contest. This year’s contest attracted 72 teams and 406 participants.

Senior College Division

Texas Tech University won first place in the senior college division with a score of 3035 points out of a possible 3250 points.

The Texas Tech team competed against 14 other teams in the university division. Members of this team, coached by Ryan Rathmann and Bryan Bernhard, included Clay Burson, Brandi Capps, Jordan Clem, Kody Lucherk, Clay Morrison, Logan Pritchett, and Brady Ragland.

Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind., was second in the senior college division with a score of 3003 points. Coached by Matt Claeys, this team was comprised of Maria Crandell, Jenna Day, Brent Dunham, Jared Jacobs, Tegan Simmons, Courtney Smith, and Courtney Wesner.

Oklahoma State University of Stillwater, coached by Dr. Mark Z. Johnson, came in third with a score of 3002. University of Illinois, Urbana, finished fourth with 2993 and Iowa State University, Ames was fifth with a score of 2962.

Additional team placings in the senior college division were: Sixth – University of Nebraska, Lincoln, 2945; Seventh – Western Illinois University, Macomb, 2918; Eighth – Chico State University, Chico, Calif., 2913; Ninth – South Dakota State University in Brookings, 2884; and Tenth – Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, 2855.

Tegan Simmons, Purdue University, was the top individual of 116 competing in the university division with 624 points out of a possible 650. In second place with 618 points, representing University of Illinois was Chance Meeter. Picking up third was Stephanie Steffes, South Dakota State University, with a score of 617. Texas Tech contestant Brandi Capps along with University of Illinois contestant Lee Rincker and Texas Tech contestant Clay Burson finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively with a score of 614. The tie was broken on higher Total Reasons Score.

Senior college reasons awards were given to the top team and top five individuals. The Texas Tech University squad captured first with 930 points. The high individual in reasons was Tegan Simmons, Purdue University with a score of 193 out of a possible 200. Texas Tech contestants Clay Morrison and Brandi Capps finished second and third respectively both with a score of 190; in fourth Amanda vonForell, Iowa State University; and fifth was Chance Meeter, University of Illinois. The ties were broken based on lower placing totals in reasons classes.

Junior College Division

Black Hawk East College, Kewanee, Ill., took home top honors out of 13 teams in the junior college division with a score of 2995 points out of a possible 3250 points.

Black Hawk East College is coached by Dan Hoge and Brian Arnold, team members were Stephen Gentry, Jon Heaton, Jared Hoffer, Sam Mattingly, Jacee May, Nick Riecke, and Andrew Stockdale.

Redlands Community College, El Reno, Okla, finished second with a score of 2950. Redlands is coached by Tanner Winter and their team consisted of Tyler Boles, Brock Herren, Heath Link, Collin Listen, Matthew McKinley, Sierra Meyers, and Dalton Newell. Lake Land College, Matton, Ill., coached by Ryan Orrick was third at 2938. Casper College, Casper, Wy., was fourth with a score of 2919 and Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Ill., was fifth with 2918.

Additional team placings in the junior college division were: Sixth – Northeastern Junior College, Sterling, Colo., 2875; Seventh – Modesto Junior College, Modesto, Calif., 2851 Eighth – Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, Miami, Okla., 2820; Ninth – Fort Scott Community College, Fort Scott, Kan., 2783; and Tenth – Illinois Central College, East Peoria, Ill., 2756.

The 104 contestants in the junior college division made for some stiff competition for top individual with Stephen Gentry of Black Hawk East coming out ahead with a total of 610 out of a possible 650 points. Right behind in second was Emily Limes of Lake Land College with a score of 609 and in a close third was Tyler Loschen, Lincoln Land Community College with 608. Finishing fourth and fifth with 606 points was Tyler Boles, Redlands Community College, and Adam Helregel, Lake Land College, in that order with the tie broken on total reasons score.

Black Hawk East College also took home high team reasons with a score of 895 points. High reasons individual was another tight race with Dalton Newell, Redlands Community College speaking the best set of reasons with a score of 186 points. Hot on his heels with scores of 185, Stephen Gentry, Black Hawk East and Jessie McClellan, Casper College, landing second and third respectively. Close behind was Dave Ammann, Lake Land College in fourth and Nick Riecke, Black Hawk East in fifth both with scores of 184. The ties were broken based on lower placing totals in reasons classes.

Junior Division

Dekalb County 4-H, Ill., coached by Matt Dice, captured top honors in the junior division of the 65th annual NBS® Swine Judging Contest this year. There were 44 teams in the Junior Division from nine states which included Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Georgia, Oklahoma, Indiana, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Montana. The Dekalb 4-H team members Tracey Clifford, Lauren Koeppe, Logan Rinehold, and Amber Shipe, accumulated 865 of a possible 975 points.

Earlham FFA #1, Iowa, finished second with 856 with teammates Paige Boston, Rachel Hoy, Cody Jimmerson, and Bryce Tiffany, coached by Charlie Fitzgerald. Thomas-Fay-Custer FFA, Thomas, Okla., under the guidance of Justin Kliewer came in third also with a score of 856. Gordon Central HS FFA, Ga., was fourth with 852 and Tri-Point FFA #1, Cullom, Ill., wrapped up fifth with 848 points. Ties were broken on highest total team questions.

The high individual in the junior division with a score of 302 out of 325 possible was Dustin Miller of Putnam County FFA, Ill. In second was Amber Shipe, of Dekalb 4-H, Ill., with a total of 301. With scores of 299, Holly Smith, Gordan Central HS, GA was third and Landon Johnson, St. Ansgar FFA, Iowa, placed fourth. Lucas Olson, South Hamilton FFA #1, Iowa, finished fifth with 298 points. Ties were broken on questions total.
