Hines Family Boar Sets Hampshire Sale Record
Hampshire records were shattered minutes ago at the Summer Type Conference Sale in Louisville, Ky.,
as the National Swine Registry sold an all-time record priced Hampshire boar, owned by Cailyn and Payton Hines of Quincy, Mich.
Sired by EBM8 Huggy Bear 9-7 on a EC5 The Beast 97-2 dam, the Grand Champion Hampshire boar and Class 3 winner soared to a final gavel call of $205,000. It was purchased by Lean Value Sires of New Carlisle, Ohio, and Sharrett Family Farms of Sabina, Ohio.
“Hampshires are back, and they are back big,” said auctioneer Kevin Wendt of Irwin, Ohio. The crowd backed his statement with their bids.
Three generations of the Hines family were present as sisters Cailyn and Payton, both active members of the National Junior Swine Association, took turns parading the boar through the ring.
Contending bidder was Top Cut Genetics of Farmland, Ind. The previous Hampshire sale record was $200,000, set approximately eight years ago.

Storer wins Shipley scholarship
Jason Shipley Memorial Awarded to Storer
The Shipley family of Newark, Ohio, presented the third Jason Shipley Memorial Scholarship in memory of their son to Heather Storer of Hillsboro, Ohio, on July 1 during the National Junior Summer Spectacular (NJSS) in Louisville, Ky.
The $1,000 scholarship was developed to honor an NJSA member who has a strong background in athletics and the swine industry. Storer is studying Animal Science at Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio. It is her goal to obtain her bachelor’s degree and then use her education to work in the swine industry.
Storer has been an active member of the NJSA since 2003. She has exhibited at the NJSA NJSS, Western Regional, World Pork Expo, National Barrow Show, Eastern Regional and Southeastern Regional. Also a strong leader, Storer has volunteered as a mentor for the Mentors Valuing People program and the NJSA leadership team, as well as assisted with organizing Ohio’s silent auction basket and state display contest. Highlights of her accomplishments include winning showmanship, skillathons, sweepstakes, Grand Champion Gilt Overall and the 2010 NJSA Outstanding Member Intermediate Division Scholarship.
Storer has also proven to be a strong competitor and enthusiastic player in several sports. She has participated in soccer, basketball and softball. She was named Most Improved Player in both soccer and basketball, as well as being named Offensive Player of the Year for the 2009-2010 basketball season. In December 2009, she was named the Edward Jones Outstanding Female Athlete of the Month.
From her involvement in athletics and the swine industry, Storer says she has learned the importance of hard work, dedication and teamwork. She says to work hard at something, you have to be dedicated and have a love for what you do. Whether it be cleaning pens and walking pigs or playing a sport that involves teamwork, the life skills and friendships Storer has made have become invaluable to her, she says. Her future goals include continuing to expand her purebred swine operation while working in the swine industry. She also plans to coach youth sports in her community.
For more information about National Junior Swine Association scholarships, please contact Alan Duttlinger, NSR Director of Junior Activities, at (765) 463-3594 or by e-mail at alan@nationalswine.com.

Shaffer wins NJSA Visionary Leader scholarship
The National Junior Swine Association (NJSA) Visionary Leader scholarship was presented to Lynsee Shaffer of Albany, Ind. at the 2010 National Junior Summer Spectacular in Louisville, Ky., on July 2.
This $500 scholarship was established to recognize one member of the NJSA Board of Directors each year for his or her outstanding contributions and service to the members of the NJSA. This award is intended to recognize the NJSA board member who has went above and beyond in their service to the organization during the past year.
Shaffer is an extremely active member in the NJSA and currently serves as the president. She has served on the leadership committee for two years and helped to plan the National Youth Leadership Conference. In addition to this Shaffer has started work on a new NJSA program, NJSA ambassadors.
Shaffer has been an ambassador for NJSA herself. She has spoken at the National FFA convention to inform FFA members about the opportunities in the NJSA. She has been an integral part in the success of the Boot Camps, giving presentations on showmanship and also planning ice breaker games. She has attended the NSR annual meeting to inform board members about the NJSA activities and has written numerous articles for The Pinnacle.
She says being a successful board member is the ability to wear many different “hats”. She believes that the most important part of serving on the board is serving the youth of the NJSA and the entire swine industry.
This will be Shaffer’s last year as a member on the board but she plans to maintain an active role in the NJSA. She plans to continue working on the NJSA Ambassadors, as well as help at shows and continue to recruit NJSA members, and possibly make a DVD for the MVP program.
Shaffer attends Purdue University and hopes to become an agriculture education teacher and FFA advisor following her graduation in December 2011.
For more information about National Junior Swine Association scholarships, please contact Alan Duttlinger, NSR Director of Junior Activities, at 765.463.3594 or by e-mail at alan@nationalswine.com.

Criteria in selecting this year’s winner included academics, goals for future, collegiate involvement, swine industry experience and honors and NJSA experience and honors.
Frobose plans to complete his master’s degree in swine nutrition and animal welfare from Kansas State University in May 2012. Following the completion of his degree Frobose hopes to obtain a position in technical services and determine if he would like to continue on into a doctorate program. His career goal is to be an internationally respected consultant in livestock production practices and their effect on the welfare and productivity on the livestock, with an emphasis on swine.
Frobose has been an active NJSA member for 12 years. He was awarded the Visionary Leader Scholarship in 2009 and The Maschoffs, Inc. scholarship in 2008. Frobose served as the NJSA Eastern Director from 2007 to 2009 and was the vice president in 2008 to 2009. He has also served on the Leadership and Services committees. He was also active in 4-H and FFA, serving in various leadership roles and participating in a variety of projects.
Frobose is also active in the Ohio Pork Producers Council and the Ohio Cattleman’s Association. He served as the Ohio Pork Ambassador for in 2002. He is involved with the National Cattleman’s Beef Association – Young Producer’s Council.
At Kansas State, Frobose has been a member of Block and Bridle, and Collegiate Farm Bureau. While in grad school he was a founding member of Food for Thought, an animal agriculture advocacy organization. During his undergraduate time he was a member of the livestock judging and meats judging teams.
Jim Nelsson, swine extension specialist from Kansas State, says “Hyatt Frobose is truly one of the brightest young people I have ever met and has the potential to be one of the bright stars in a swine industry that continues to want and need outstanding human capital.”
