NSR plans move to new office building

New NSR office building

New site in West Lafayette will meet needs of growing organization

The National Swine Registry is excited to announce it will be moving to a new office building the third weekend of October. Located only two miles away, and still in the northwest corner of West Lafayette, the new building is an 8,000-square-foot modern, spacious and attractive facility that will meet the needs of the growing NSR staff and programs.

“Our current building, in addition to having maintenance problems, is no longer big enough to meet the needs of the expanding NSR staff,” said NSR CEO Darrell Anderson. “Our small break room is also the board room, storage room and copy room, and as of June, the office for our newest employee.”

The current NSR office building was built by the American Shetland Pony Club in 1956. It was then purchased by the American Yorkshire Club, then under the leadership of Glenn Conatser, which moved into it in December 1975.

When Anderson started as CEO of the AYC in 1987, there were nine employees of the organization. 1994 brought the merger of the Hampshire Swine Registry and the United Duroc Swine Registry with the AYC to form the NSR, and in 1998, the American Landrace Association joined. Since the merger and addition of new programs, including the National Junior Swine Association, the department of Genetics and Technical Services and new shows and services, staff has increased to a current 14 plus three field representatives, in addition to two employees of the American Berkshire Association, which leases space in the 5,000-square-foot building as well.

The AYC still owns the current building, and has leased it to the NSR since its formation. The AYC is also the purchaser of the new building, which they closed on in May. Although the current building has not sold, its site outside of town on the busy U.S. Highway 52 makes it an attractive location, and it has been considered by banks, restaurants and other drive-through businesses.

“On behalf of the entire staff of the NSR, I would like to express appreciation to the American Yorkshire Club board members for their decision to purchase the new office building, and their continued support of the staff and our work,” said Anderson. “We look forward to getting moved and settled in, and welcoming everyone to our new office.”

The new physical address of the National Swine Registry will be 2639 Yeager Road, West Lafayette, IN 47906. The mailing address will stay the same at P.O. Box 2417, the phone will remain 765.463.3594, and the fax will continue at 765.497.2959.

Although the NSR phone and fax will remain available, all business functions, including pedigree orders and immediate access to email, will be temporarily unavailable during the moving days on Wednesday, Oct. 13 through Friday, Oct. 15.

Above and below are several of the offices in the new building -- prior to the old tenents moving out.
Watch for upcoming photos once the NSR makes it our own!

The herd boar is Red Draw and he is the sire of most of the red pigs at Cody's.
The young pig is the 10 litter that's in the sale. This is a very deep set of pigs, Red Draw looks like he's getting the job done!

CARDWELL, Mo. -- The family of Homer J. Moore of Cardwell had always wondered what happened to the Purple Heart he received for bravery in World War II. According to his family, it's been missing for over 60 years.

Recently, their days of wondering came to an end when Chris Martin, an 18-year-old senior at Southland High School (Mo.), found the long lost medal underneath the mud, in the FFA pig pens behind the high school. How it got there nobody knows.

Part II, Dr. Clint Schwab visits Ukraine

(l to r) Dr. Tom Baas, Ukrainian host,
Dr. Clint Schwab, Dr. Harold Hodson
This is the second of a four-part series. Read Dr. Schwab's description of the visit in Part I.

Part 1, Dr. Clint Schwab visits Ukraine

Dr. Clint Schwab, director of genetic and technical services for the National Swine Registry, visited Ukraine in July 2010 to both present information to swine producers in this country, as well as learn about their systems. Accompanying him were Dr. Tom Baas of Iowa State University, and Dr. Harold Hodson from Swine Genetics International, Iowa. Following are Schwab's second set of photos and descriptions of this tour.

An F1 sow pre-farrow, and another illustration of the typical farrowing system in Ukraine.

This picture was taken just inside the front gate of a larger nucleus farm that operates 1,100 sows and finishes all progeny. This was the largest unit we visited; it began using U.S. genetics about six months prior. The company, APK Agro Industrial Company, is located in the Zapopizhja region and operates 13 different breeding farms. This farm has 92 employees ... interestingly, they didn't complain about the cost of production.

An illustration of how they take care of the appearance around the farm. In between each building, it was landscaped like this picture.

This is a boar exercise unit. Similar to that used for exercising horses in the U.S., boars are driven out of the boar stud each day and put into this carousel for a period of time.

Interior of the boar stud facility.

The next several pictures are from a seminar conducted in Dnepropetrovsk where Baas, Hodson, and I presented topics related to US industry structure, components of effective genetic improvement programs, and how to use frozen semen.

Started in 1991, the Progeny Test is designed to analyze the offspring of purebred sires. Factors that influence final results are production performance at the test station, structural soundness of each pig, carcass composition, and eating qualities. The top indexing sires in each breed and the entire test are recognized with SUPER SIRE™ and PORQUE awards.

Averages for the 35 entries in the 2010 test were 1.83 lbs. average daily gain, 0.96 inches backfat at the 10th rib, 6.46 square inches loin-eye area, 5.9 (out of possible ten) soundness score, 5.71 loin pH, and 2.57% intramuscular fat (marbling).

This year’s Progeny Test attracted 278 pigs from 8 states that represented six major purebred breeds. On March 26, 2010, these pigs were delivered to the Iowa Swine Evaluation Station in Ames. Each group consisted of eight pigs that were from at least three different litters sired by the same boar and weighed between 30 and 65 pounds. Pigs did not have to come from the same breeder’s operation and may be any combination of barrows and gilts.

The groups of pigs were placed on test after being at the station at least five days and when their average pen weight reached 70 pounds. As the pigs reached 250 pounds, they were harvested and evaluated and a ranking established.

“This year’s analysis of the entries in the test continued the 2009 theme of dual awards,” stated A.J. Shute, test coordinator. “The SUPER SIRE™ award continues to recognize sires excelling in lean gain characteristics based on primarily ADG and percent lean. The PORQUE award recognizes sires outstanding in eating quality attributes that affect consumer satisfaction such as tenderness, juiciness, and color. This allows the unique contributions to different areas of economically important traits to be highlighted and valued in each of the various breeds and even specific sires within each breed.”

The 2010 Progeny Test was the 21st to be conducted in conjunction with the National Barrow Show® since 1991. Another Progeny Test is scheduled to be delivered Friday, March 25, 2011.
